Our flesh is designed to be pleased with our own work and our own accomplishments; it longs for the praises of men who appreciate our labor and sacrifice. The flesh cannot understand the things of God and is programmed through sin to relate to the ways of the world. Often it is easier to accept the burdens of religion than to truly believe the word of God. We have a hard time believing that we should rest in Him even though He said…
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
We can’t imagine how men are ever going to come to the knowledge of Christ unless we get out there and knock on doors or visit foreign countries. Our flesh has difficulty believing what Jesus said…
“And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself. But He was saying this to indicate the kind of death by which He was to die.” John 12:32-33
Can you or I draw men to Jesus? If so, then the Father sacrificed His Son in vain. Since we know that the word of God is true, it then falls to us to choose to believe in Him or not. Jesus is truly hidden from the eyes of men and only the Father can reveal Him. And, we know that the Spirit of God is only given to those who obey Him.
I once had an interesting experience that the Lord used to demonstrate His absolute control over all His works. We built a new house a few years back which, being set up on a hill, has a very long steep and winding driveway. I’m often reminded how out of shape I am after going down to the street and back for the mail.
One hot summer day I was at the top of the hill doing some work when to my surprise I looked up to see an elderly couple laboring up the driveway toward me. At the top, when they regained their composure from their hike, the elderly gentleman asked me if I knew about the last days and the kingdom of God… they were from the local chapter of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
After I listened to all the man had to say, the Lord filled my heart with compassion and I invited them to stay and study the word of God together. While they declined to come inside, the Lord ministered to us all very powerfully and tenderly—there was not a dry eye among us. I told the man that the Lord did not require our canvassing on His behalf to gain His approval, but only the obedience of faith; believing in Him, drawing near and keeping His sole commandment with brokenhearted submission. With surprise he retorted: “How then will God ever get his message out to others if we never leave home?”
What a scene it was; two elderly strangers panting in the summer heat, drenched in sweat, standing in my brand new driveway, exhausted from the climb, listening to the word of God being delivered to them through His servant… who never left home!
God is truly the keeper of His Salvation, and He has ordained it that His Son will draw all men to Himself. We have but one charge: to believe on Him whom He sent. If we will truly believe Him above our teachers we will abide in Him and always be where He is, always listening to His voice, always filled with His Spirit and ready to serve the body of Christ.
Just as God the Father sent His Son into the world with His words, so Jesus sent His apostles into the world with His words… so that we who would believe their words would also be one with them as they are one with Christ Jesus, and He is one with the Father.
“As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. ”For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.
I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.” John 17:18-21
I urge you to carefully abide in Christ Jesus, drawing ever nearer as these last days unfold. There are deceptions on every side of us to steal our gaze from Him—our first Love. Be careful to listen to His voice and wait only upon Him, so that after all of His children have been gathered we will not find ourselves still outside… doing the work of a ministry.
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’
Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. ”The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell-and great was its fall.” Matthew 7:21-27
Have we believed their word; the words of Jesus that He sent through His apostles? Have we been drawn to Him? If so then we will be found loving one another; serving His little ones, our brethren, as God has equipped us, right where He has placed us, knowing that we have no ability to do so lest we abide fully in Him. Our flesh will not like the lack of celebrity and the humble and hidden nature of God’s love in us, but our hearts will rejoice in being one with our Heavenly Father and Christ Jesus whom He sent. Thank God that through His death on the cross… He will draw all men to Himself.
